U.S. Naturalization

Unlock the American Dream

The Naturalization Process: 6 Empowering Steps

Who Qualifies? Core Requirements

Imagine raising your right hand, taking the Oath of Allegiance, and officially becoming a U.S. citizen—voting in elections, traveling freely with a U.S. passport, and enjoying the full rights and protections America offers.

For lawful permanent residents (green card holders), naturalization is the thrilling final chapter of your immigration journey. At our law firm, we turn that vision into reality every day, guiding clients through the process with expertise, clarity, and genuine care.

As of 2026, the path is straightforward but precise. Here’s everything you need to know about the requirements and step-by-step process.

Who Qualifies? Core Requirements

The Naturalization Process: 6 Empowering Steps

Who Qualifies? Core Requirements

You may be eligible if you meet these key criteria:

  • You are at least 18 years old when you file.

  • You have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 5 years (or just 3 years if you are married to and living with a U.S. citizen).

  • You have maintained continuous residence in the U.S. for the full required period (no long breaks that could disrupt your status).

  • You have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the last 5 years (or 18 months for spouses of U.S. citizens).

  • You have lived in the state or USCIS district where you file for at least 3 months before submitting your application.

  • You demonstrate good moral character (no serious criminal issues or other disqualifying factors).

  • You show attachment to the U.S. Constitution and a willingness to support its principles.

Special rules apply for U.S. military members (expedited or even waived residency requirements), certain spouses, VAWA self-petitioners, and others. We’ll review your unique situation to confirm eligibility right away.

1. Confirm You Qualify — Start with a free consultation or USCIS’s eligibility tool. We make this effortless.

2. File Form N-400 — Submit the Application for Naturalization. Filing online is faster and costs $710; paper filing is $760. Reduced fees ($380) or full waivers are available for qualifying low-income applicants.

3. Biometrics Appointment — Provide fingerprints and photos for background checks (usually within weeks).

4. Ace Your Interview & Tests — A USCIS officer reviews your case and administers the tests.

  • English test: Read, write, and speak basic English.

  • 2025 Civics Test (required for applications filed on or after October 20, 2025): Answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly from a list of 128 on U.S. history, government, and civics. Free official study guides, flashcards, and videos are available on USCIS.gov—we provide personalized prep sessions to help you succeed.

5. Receive a Decision — Approved? You’ll get notice for the Oath Ceremony. Denied? We handle appeals swiftly.

6. Take the Oath & Celebrate — Swear allegiance, receive your Certificate of Naturalization, and step into your new life as a U.S. citizen!
